Coins are insured on grade, and grade is fragile. A slabbed, third-party-graded coin carries a certification number an underwriter can price; a raw coin in a flip is an opinion. The practical consequence is that condition IS the value here in a way it is not for bullion — a coin that tones or gets handled loses money without anyone stealing anything, and no policy pays for deterioration you caused by storing it badly.

A coin collection is the classic estate trap: assembled over decades by one person who knew exactly what everything was, and inherited by people who do not. Without the certification records and purchase history stored alongside the coins, heirs routinely sell at bullion value what was worth a multiple of it. The paperwork is not administrative overhead — for this asset class it is a large fraction of the value.

Slabbed coins in boxes stack efficiently. A 5×10×24 suits most working collections. Full runs and currency albums usually want a 10×10×24.
