Estate planning
The box should not close when you do.
The single most common reason clients move a box away from a bank has nothing to do with security. It is what happens to the family the week after a death.
Private, by appointment. No account relationship required to visit.
The problem, plainly
A bank safe deposit box is commonly frozen on notice of the renter’s death. Opening it then requires a court order. The original will is very often inside that box — so the document needed to settle the estate is locked behind the process it was meant to start. Families lose months to this, and pay counsel for the privilege.
Three ways we structure around it
Trust rental
The trust is the renter. A trust does not die, so there is nothing to freeze. Successor trustees keep access, and the box never enters probate.
Beneficiary designation
Name the parties who should have access. It is documented with the facility and it takes effect without a court.
Authorised agents
Add an attorney, an executor, or a family member as an agent while you are alive. Revocable at any time.
Set this up on the day you rent, not later. It costs nothing extra and it is the part people postpone. More on storing wills and deeds →

Common questions
- Why is a bank box a problem when someone dies?
- Many are frozen on notice of death, and access then requires a court order. The will is often inside the box, which makes the delay circular and expensive.
- How does a trust rental fix that?
- The trust is the renter, and the trust does not die. Successor trustees keep access without probate.
- Can I name a beneficiary instead?
- Yes. A beneficiary designation on the box gives named parties documented access.
- Can my attorney hold access?
- Yes, as a designated authorised agent, and you can revoke it at any time.
- Is there a notary on site?
- Yes, by appointment, so you can execute and store in one visit.
