Fine art is insured on appraisal plus provenance, and the provenance is doing as much work as the appraisal. An underwriter wants to know the chain of ownership, not only the current value. Environment is written into these policies more often than people expect: a fine art rider can carry conditions on temperature and relative humidity, and storing a work outside them can affect a claim. In a Florida summer, an unconditioned room does not meet them.

What happens to it in an estate
Art passes badly through estates when the file does not pass with it. Purchase invoices, exhibition history, condition reports and any authentication are what make a work saleable later; without them the estate is offering an object with a story nobody can verify. Keeping the documentation with the work rather than in a drawer at home is the difference between an heir inheriting an asset and inheriting a problem.
